Dom Discusses: Team Liquid – The Unluckiest Team Around

Liquid have been held back by issues outside of their control.

Welcome back to Dom Discusses. Today I will discuss Team Liquid, a team that has come so close to winning top-tier tournaments but, have yet to cross the final hurdle. Team Liquid has historically been the unluckiest team in modern Counter-Strike.

There is a lot of talent in Liquid’s roster. Nicholas “nitr0” Cannella, is a versatile player who has been highly rated within North America for a long time. Jonathan “EliGE” Jablonowski, has developed into one of the best players in North America and Russel “Twistzz” Van Dulken, is rising star in the CS:GO scene who can compete with the best. Epitacio “TACO” de Melo, is an experienced support player who has won two major titles. Keith “NAF” Markovic, has been a frag machine who has shined on Team Liquid. All of this masterminded by Wilton “zews” Prado, who is an experienced coach and player. Team Liquid is one of the youngest top-tier teams around with an average age of 21. The youth in this team only proves that they’re going to keep progressing. However, Team Liquid are yet to win a top-tier tournament.

With the only tournament victory since Liquid’s birth being cs_summit 2, which is a relaxed tournament containing only a few decent teams. Team Liquid can safely say they have underachieved. Team Liquid is #3 on the HLTV rankings, and despite consistently good placings, they have been unable to win tournaments. Arguably their best chance of recent times was StarSeries i-League S5, but they fell to NRG who eventually made it to the finals. Team Liquid have consistently disappointed when it matters the most. For example, at ESL One Cologne 2018 they bombed out in groups.

Team Liquid has always been unable to reach the final hurdle. During the end of 2017, it was usually FaZe that thwarted them. FaZe obliterated Team Liquid in the ESL One New York 2017 final. During 2018, however, the storyline of the year has been Astralis beating Liquid. In the ECS S5 finals, ELEAGUE Premier 2018 finals and ESL Pro League S7 finals, Astralis have destroyed Liquid. While Astralis have been almost unbeatable recently; only NaVi have shown that they are beatable. Liquid’s players have always had confidence; often saying they are going to become the best team in the world. They need to prove this and win some proper tournaments.

However, there are internal barriers. Zews was unable to attend the ELEAGUE Premier 2018 due to health issues. Team Liquid losing their coach is a huge blow, and this made it so there was no potential upset against Astralis. Also, in practice previously, TACO has had to play with high ping from Brazil due to visa issues also. This would mean that playing in scrims would be very difficult, which is a big issue for practicing. Also, being a long way from teammates when trying to properly practice would hinder the progress they could have made. TACO wouldn’t have had zews behind him and the team wouldn’t have TACO with them; this creates an invisible barrier which could hurt the team a lot. If all of that wasn’t enough, Twistzz is also suffering from health issues which has not been officially released.

Team Liquid is the unluckiest team around. The notorious Brazilian visa issue hailstorm, health issues and bereavement have massively hindered this team. They’ve been excellent despite these issues and have achieved excellent placings at tier one events. It won’t be long before Team Liquid have a trophy in their hands because these guys have shown in the past the ability to overcome barriers; it’s only a matter of time before they do it again.
