In Counter-Strike’s biggest ever upset, Cloud9 shocked the world when they overcame FaZe Clan in the Grand Finals of the ELEAGUE Major 2018. The Major was supposed to be FaZe’s Major, but on the decider map they blew a 15-11 lead and lost in overtime. This was arguably the most shocking throw in CS:GO Major history. This failure has shaped the CS:GO scene into what it is today.
What would have happened if FaZe Clan had won? Well, Cloud9 would most likely have stuck together, as Jake “Stewie2K” Yip wouldn’t have sought new challenges at MIBR. They could still be a top 5 team. FaZe themselves would’ve been on a massive high; the confidence boost would be scary although the same issues with Olof “olofmeister” Kajbjer would still be an issue. Such a victory would mean that Astralis would find it a lot more difficult to conquer the scene, as the rest of FaZe would be better than they are now due to that confidence boost. FaZe would be top dogs, with Astralis as contenders. One of Astralis’ reasons to their success is high confidence; if a star-studded roster like FaZe had that, then they would rule the CS:GO scene.
Cloud9 won the Boston Major and Stewie2K departed in search of new challenges. This departure was the catalyst which destroyed Cloud 9. FaZe had issues, notably, olofmeister had personal issues earlier in the year followed by an injury. This would’ve happened regardless of the Major result. FaZe Clan won both ESL One Belo Horizonte and IEM Sydney with standins. With the lack of a clear #1, Astralis has seized their chance to become the best team in Counter-Strike.
Astralis wouldn’t be where they are today if FaZe had won the Major. This is because FaZe would have had a huge confidence boost from the Major and their star players Nikola “NiKo” Kovac and Ladislav “GuardiaN” Kovacs would be playing with loads of confidence knowing they had finally won a Major title. Astralis would still be a contender because of their unique strategies and unrivalled work-ethic, but a lot of their confidence wouldn’t be there because they wouldn’t be walking through the CS:GO scene. Therefore, they wouldn’t do as well as they are now, and teams like Team Liquid would be performing much better because they wouldn’t have to face an unbeatable team in every final they reach. The scene would be a lot better, and in my opinion, it would be more interesting because you would watch tournaments not always knowing who would win; nowadays, you’d be mad not to pick Astralis.
